César Manrique Foundation

The César Manrique Foundation was opened in 1992 and is situated in César Manrique’s home in Tahiche. It is a private non-profit organisation that uses the money from entrance ticket sales for three main aims; to conserve, study and spread the work of César Manrique; to promote artistic activity and cultural reflection; for the development of activities that favour respect for the natural environment and the order of the landscape.

More than 300,000 visitors a year pass through the Foundation making it the fourth most visited private museum in Spain. They receive weekly requests from university students throughout Europe asking for information for thesis they are writing on the life and works of César Manrique.

In 2004 London’s Tate gallery named the César Manrique Foundation in a programme of 10 holidays of cultural interest and in November 2003 the Sunday Times wrote “the Lanzarote of Cesar Manrique is among the 10 most interesting cultural destinations in the world”. The other 9 including the Germany of Bach, the Palaces of Venice, the Ruins of Pompei and the Tombs of the Pharoahs. The report continues “Cesar Manrique was one of the most thoughtful and gifted artists of the 20th Century, exploring the raw and rough/edged world of the Canary Islands to stunning effect. It’s now obvious that he was ahead of the game, producing the kind of site-specific sculptures and buildings that are only now finding an echo in Northern Europe. Lanzarote was his HQ”.
